Ducky lips and the dreaded 'ledge.'

Writer's picture: alasdairsuttonalasdairsutton

In this series of blogs we're going to look at the most common 'myths' and worries in Aesthetics. From ducky lips to chipmunk cheeks we'll look at why it happens and exactly how to avoid it.

The first thing we'll look at is probably the most common thing people think about when aesthetics is mentioned..... LIPS. Lips have the ability to draw people in and are a focal point of the face but they should be a focal point for the right reasons, not because they're obviously treated or overly done.

So, how should your lips look?

The answer is totally dependant on what you're starting with and what your end goal is. Some want a super defined cupids bow and others just want a slight plump but we can all agree on duck lips and an obvious ledge above the top lip not fitting into how a natural lip should look. Ultimately, everybody wants and needs something slightly different and so we treat accordingly.

Left- Before any lips filler carried out. Good shape, definition and overall size. Slight assymetey which is normal and slight volume loss shown by number of lines in the lip.

Below- Same client immediately after 0.4ml injected.

Why do duck lips happen? Can I avoid the ridge?

This is usually down to a few reasons but the main one is too much filler. The tissue of the lips can only take so much product and when more and more and more is added it will end up protruding forwards to give the 'duck lip' look.

Next is the type of filler used. Some fillers are very thick and are very helpful for adding structure and replacing significant volume loss, others are very thin and help hydrate and soften fine lines. For the lips we need something right in

the middle. Thick enough to hydrate and volumise but not too thick where by it affects how the tissue acts.

So, can you avoid the dreaded ridge? ABSOLUTELY.

We should never be injecting above the vermillion border or pink lip space when enhancing the lips. For somebody looking for more definition we would inject more towards the border but still below it and for those client who have naturally more defined lips to begin with would inject much further down.

How much filler is right for me?

The only way to decide this for definite is to see a client in person.

We see what you're starting with, find out what you want and what you don't want and then choose from there. If you're somebody will very thin lips to begin with and a small mouth then you'll need a smaller amount of filler.

In contrast, it will take more filler on somebody with big lips before they start to notice a difference ass shown in this before and after. This client had very full lips to begin with and so 1ml of Juvederm is very subtle.

What if i don't like them?

We are very set in the way we carry out lip enhancements to make things as comfortable as possible and to get the best outcome and result. Once your lips are numb and we've discussed our goals in the consultation phase we treat very methodically. Initially, adding very small amounts of dermal filler (which also contains a local anaesthetic to make further injections more comfortable) before showing you how they look at around 0.3ml where the enhancement will be very subtle. It gives us chance to constantly check progress with the client and this continues as we add more product until they're perfect.
